Gift Ideas for a New Mom

Sharing is caring!

We have been there right. Standing in the aisle of the store, trying to find the perfect gift to give a new mom. We know the things she needs for baby, and all the gifts she receives will be focused on the new tiny human entering the world. Right from the start, we set her up with the thought that she will lose herself in motherhood. There are things you can give a new mom that will set her up to focus on herself, even during those hard first weeks.

To help a new mom out, set her up with some things that help her remember to take care of herself while being a mom.  Below are the things I recently chose to give a new mom.

A plush, fluffy robe

This robe is so cute! For the picture, I went with the one covered in coffee cups, as it just seemed perfectly fitting for a new mom.

A comfortable bathrobe is so nice those first few weeks. It’s easy to wear for nursing and pumping. It can be used in the hospital as well as when you get home. It’s just so versatile for any new mom.  You want something comfortable that you can lounge in.  I especially enjoy that this one has a hood because sometimes it’s cold enough to need it.

Fuzzy Socks

If you haven’t felt these socks from World Softest, you’re missing out! The name does not lie, these socks are so soft. They carry many different styles, so they’re perfect for anyone. They even have some that look more like a traditional crew sock that you could wear outdoors on the cold days.

As a new mom, some cozy, soft socks would be the perfect addition to a new mommy gift.

Sweater knit slippers

Maybe because I’m cold, and it’s Michigan, but I need my feet warm. Between the softest socks on earth and a really cozy pair of slippers, a new mom will be set to walk anywhere.  The slippers would be great in the hospital, or to wear at home.   I’m in love with these sweater knit slippers.

Sugar Scrubs

It’s no secret that I’m a lover of all things bath related, but as a new mom, there’s not much time for a long relaxing bath. Being able to use a great sugar scrub just makes the skin feel renewed.  These scrubs from Tree Hut are some of my favorites from the store.  The Hawaiian kukui Shea scrub is probably my absolute favorite one they make, with the Mango being a close second.  If you’re not familiar you definitely need to pop into Ulta and check these out.

Hand Cream

This is one of my all-time favorite hand creams. It’s a goats milk lotion from Dionis, and it is so nourishing. I keep the small one in my bag for when I’m out and about, and I keep a pump container of it in my bathroom.  The Love scent is so good, lightly floral and reminiscent of a plumeria perfume I had in my teenage years that I was in love with.  They have many scents available and even have unscented if mom is staying away from fragrances.

Tired as a Mother Coffee Mug

Some things are just perfectly fitting.  If the new mom was a coffee drinker before, she will definitely appreciate this Tired as a Mother mug. It’s one of those sayings that is just perfectly fitting, and what mommy wouldn’t love to drink their favorite hot beverage out of a fun motherhood mug?

Coffee, Tea or Cocoa

Get her a specialty coffee, tea or cocoa she loves, but maybe won’t splurge on.  I am a cocoa lover, so for me, getting Godiva or Ghirardelli hot cocoa is a treat and a splurge.  Depending on her favorites you can choose something she will love.  You could also drop by with her favorite Starbucks drink to treat her with.

A Good Book to Read

Being a new mom is overwhelming, and in the beginning, it is so easy to get lost in the day to day struggle to make it through that there isn’t a lot of time for self care, but that doesn’t make it any less important. Getting the new mom a book, any book will do, but I recommend The Self Care Journey,  will help her walk through this new realm. Before becoming a mom self care is easy and done without thought, after becoming a mom it takes deliberate action. This book will walk her through these daily struggles to find the balance. There are thousands of inspirational books for moms and any of them would be great.

Some Delicious Chocolates

New moms deserve a special treat, so a nice assortment of good chocolates is perfect for a new mom as she spends hours sitting & nursing her new baby.  You could also get her favorite treat to enjoy if chocolate isn’t her thing.  I hear there are people out there that aren’t chocolate fiends?! Whatever her favorite treat, she would love having something special to have for herself.

These Ghirardelli chocolates are some of my favorites.

What are some of your favorite new mom gifts?

I know this list is nowhere near exhaustive, so what would you add to the list?

Going for chocolates and maybe cake or some other craves for the new mom. Giving birth definitely deserves a celebration, and some comfort and sweet treats for the mom. Thanks for the suggestions, Becky.

After my son was born I didn’t go anywhere for a few weeks. The fluffy robe, socks, and slippers were definitely my new mommy uniform.

Yes… fuzzy socks and hand cream. For some reason, my hand got really dry after I gave birth. And who doesn’t love fuzzy socks!

Fuzzy socks are the best! If you haven’t found a pair of Worlds Softest you should find some, a local store sells them and they’re seriously the best fuzzy socks on the planet.

Hi Becky. I’m a mom to two little boys. I remember those first few days/months with a newborn well.
You’re right. It’s so easy to focus on babies, that mothers often get left out. I think as a new mom, there were two gifts that I appreciated the most (at the time). One was a gift certificate to a restaurant so I could have some meals delivered to the house, and didn’t have to worry about making dinner. The other was a gift certificate for a cleaning lady (same idea). I think those allowed me to have some time for self-care, and helped make my life just a little bit easier. Although that plush robe looks heavenly right about now.

I almost put cleaning services on this list. That is the thing I would have loved most those first few weeks.

Great post Becky! You are so right, once the baby comes, everyone forgets about mom, herself included. Any of these, given as gifts to a new mom would go a long way towards helping her remember to take some time to breathe and relax herself. Definitely keeping these in mind next time someone I know becomes pregnant.

Thanks Heather! 🙂 It’s way too easy to get lost in trying to figure out motherhood.

Thanks for writing this post. Most mom’s seem expected to only care about the baby post natal, but she deserves care too! Also, it can be tricky to figure out what she’ll need or want because of sensitivitirs.

Yes, our bodies go through such trauma to bring those precious babies into the world and we need to make sure to take care of ourselves during that time too. As more experienced moms we need to help these new moms realize how important it is to care for themselves.
