10 Family Activities to Enjoy This Fall

Can you believe the end of August is upon us? Wasn’t it just July?  The air is getting cooler, and school is back in session here. Seeing summer winding down has me getting excited about fall coming. Fall is my favorite season, especially in the beauty of northern Michigan. There are some really unique and fun places you can visit for some affordable family activities.

These are some of my absolute favorite places to go on dates with my husband, or even take the family out on a nice day in the fall. There are some places that are just best to visit during autumn, and that aren’t available throughout the rest of the year.

Apple orchard

One of our favorite places to visit is the apple orchard.  We are lucky to have a pretty good one just a few miles away and a huge one right down the road from my in law’s house.  With the ability to go on hay rides, pick your own apples, enjoy some cider (or frozen cider yummmm), eat some cider or pumpkin doughnuts, and just enjoy time with the family.

Hard Cider/ Wine Tasting

Both of the orchards we enjoy going to make their own hard cider and/or wine.  This part is open year round, and you can enjoy the different flavors of cider or wine made right at the orchard.  This, obviously, is more of a date activity, but still a very fun thing to do with your partner or even a few friends.

Picnic in the Park

With the crisp air, and beauty of the leaves changing colors, being outdoors is perfect in the fall. Packing some warm soup, or your favorite warm food would make for a very fun afternoon outdoors. There are several places where we enjoy sitting outdoors.  Our town has a walking path along the river with several wooded & grassy areas where you can sit and enjoy nature. Taking advantage of these places is perfect in the fall when the paths aren’t as crowded.

Family Pictures

This time of year it seems as if the photographers are also feeling extra inspired. Almost every day I can find a mini-session booking for a reduced rate. I can usually find a 15-20 minute mini-session at the orchard or park for $50 or less.  Fall family portraits are some of my favorites to have taken. The clothes are cute, the weather cooperates more with my hair, and the foliage colors are beautiful.

Enjoying the Pumpkin Patch

It seems like every year we make a full day of going to the orchard and pumpkin farm.  We have 2 great pumpkin patches near us with different offerings.  One costs money to enter and the other is free.  The one that charges admission usually has a petting zoo, a corn maze, cider & doughnuts, and plenty of places for the kids to play. The free one has different things depending on the day, but it’s my favorite. Last year when we went they were offering steer rides, they have days where you can pet the animals, days with bake sales, or tractor rides.  They have

The free one has different things depending on the day, but it’s my favorite. Last year when we went they were offering steer rides, they have days where you can pet the animals, days with bake sales, or tractor rides.  They have giant cute wooden toys for the kids to climb on and explore, like a train with several train cars, a tractor, and a truck.  They have cute fall decorations out everywhere that you can get pictures with.

Visit a Haunted House

Now, admittedly, this is not my favorite thing to do, I’m far too much of a scardey cat to deal with haunted houses. That being said though, I have been talked into going by my friends, and even though it scared the pants off of me, it is fun to think back on now. I know there are so many great haunted houses put on all over the country, so you shouldn’t have a hard time finding a favorite.

Fall Festivals & Events

One of the things in my town that really shows that Fall is in full swing is the Jeep Creep which is put on by a local resort location in October. If you’re in Central/ Northern Michigan & have a Jeep or want to check out a fun Jeep centered event you’ll want to check this out.  We always go walk around the lots checking out everyone’s Jeeps, watch them drive around the challenge course, walk through vendor row, and of course participate in the Trunk or Treat.

There is also the Renaissance Festival going on in early fall, and several harvest festivals happening.  It seems as if every weekend has some sort of festival going on in a nearby town.

Color Tours

Enjoying a nice long drive seeing the colors change is so relaxing.  We love going for long drives to more scenic areas that allow us to experience the beauty that Michigan holds. There are so many routes we can take that will give us a beautiful drive with all Northern Michigan has to offer.  We can usually drive around lakeshores and see the colored leaves all around the lakes.

Hunting Season

Ok, I know, not everyone is going to be happy with me for this one, but if you’re not a fan you can skip right on by it.

Our family is filled with hunters and the change in the air brings about plenty of preparations for the approaching deer hunting season. We have already gone out to check on the blinds, set up the automatic feeder & began target shooting in preparation for the approaching season.  Up here in northern Michigan, deer season is a huge deal, kids even have the first day of rifle season off of school. It’s a holiday to us.  While there’s nothing better than providing our family with some great meat, just spending hours outdoors in nature, just taking in the beauty.

Self-care in these activities?

For me, I can take in what I’m doing and allow it to fill me up.  Does it always work? No.  Some days we can take a drive and I can breathe in the beauty around me, other days it doesn’t fill my heart the same way.  Being in nature, experiencing some fun in the woods or by water is one way I can really fill my heart and come out renewed.    If you are able to relax and really take in where you are, enjoy the scenery, and let yourself be filled up, then go right ahead and do it. Allow it to fill your heart and be part of your daily

My favorite part of fall?

One of the best parts of fall is my birthday, and since it is quickly approaching I’m starting to celebrate.
