5 Ways to Spend More Time on Yourself in the New Year

How will you spend more time on yourself in the new year? It’s crazy to think that Christmas is just a few short days away, and the new year is just beyond that.  The new year always brings about a season of new beginning and change.  It is a time of resolutions and trying to better ourselves in the new year.

I don’t really make resolutions for myself, as I am continually making new goals and trying to better myself. What I try to do in the new year is to make goals and give myself the strategy to make them happen. Last year I started the year looking for a creative outlet for myself, and from that goal, this blog was born.  I have also tried to balance my writing and my need to spend more time on myself, which has been a challenge.

5 Ways to Spend More Time on Yourself in the New Year

1. Make it conscious decision each and every day

Each day I need to remind myself to stop what I’m doing and take the time to focus on myself for a few minutes.  Especially this time of the year, it is so easy to get consumed by everything going on with the family, holidays, shopping, wrapping, decorating, that you can become completely consumed by doing for everyone else and completely run yourself down because you aren’t doing things for yourself.

Now, I really LOVE wrapping presents, so this time of year I go out of my way to make it a fun and relaxing experience.  I make cocoa, put on Christmas music, and really get into the spirit of the holidays. This works for me, it may not work for you. But do something that recharges your heart each day. Anything from buying the coffee for the person in line behind you, to listening to your favorite music can recharge your heart.  For some great free self-care ideas, you’ll want to read this.

2. Schedule time

Look at your schedule each day to see where you can fit it in. Do you have 5 minutes in the morning, during your child’s nap, or after the family is asleep to devote to yourself? Taking as little as 5 minutes for yourself can make a world of difference.  Use it to your advantage.  Even taking a few minutes to wear a sheet mask during your kid’s bath time counts.  Do something for you.

3. Make it a zero guilt zone

As moms, we already feel guilty about most decisions we make.  Focusing on our own needs, wants, and desires shouldn’t ever be a source of guilt.  We need to have interests outside of our children, because sadly, our kids will grow up and move along, and we will once again be able to focus on our own desires.  Keeping your interests and hobbies will help keep your sanity during the young years of motherhood, but will also give you something to lean back on when your children grow.

4. Make a stockpile

When I find things I like using for my own self care on sale, I make sure to grab them.  If I see a good deal on anything I enjoy and fills my heart I try to get it then so that I don’t have to feel guilty,  or try to do fit things in the budget at the last minute.  I grab sheet masks, lotions, body scrubs, nail polish, you name it.  If it’s on sale and something I use regularly in my self care routine I will stash it for later.   Note, these items are also great to keep on hand for when you need a quick last minute gift.

5. Get inspired and organized.

Looking for inspiration from Pinterest, or even books, like the Self Care Journey (now available on Amazon), will help guide you down a path of spending more time on yourself.  You can also get a journal or calendar and write out what you’re needing and doing for self care each day.   Having everything you need for self care written down, stockpiled, and ready to go will help you be more successful in taking time for yourself each day.
